“To seek Europe is to make it! (...) Europe exists through its search for the infinite – and this is what I call adventure.”
Denis de Rougemont, (1962)
In the attempt to define the indefinable, we reach places we never imagined. Without direction, without destination, through admiration and faith in the past, through the utopia of progress, we build Europe. Amidst the anguish of the unattainable and the unbearable pain of not being or not knowing, the path moves toward an identity that probably has not yet been found. Who knows if we will ever reach it. Maybe Europe is impossible. What matters is to keep on walking, to keep on dreaming. After all, what would Europe be without the dream?
Europe Signs and Conflicts of a Common Culture is a theoretical-practical reflection that critically looks for and questions the existence of a possible common European culture. Through theoretical research and an important collective and participatory design component, the project seeks to answer the many questions raised over time about what defines Europe, identifying the social and cultural factors that bring us closer and those that separate us, in order to later collectively rethink this potential identity and open it to new ideas of Europe.
